Manual thinning,
done right.
Pro Thin Northland is an owner-operated silviculture crew built around precision chainsaw thinning to waste, with a chemical thinning option also available, plus planting, pruning, spraying and forest management. Nine crew, four owners on the ground, one standard.
Owner-operators work on every crew, not just off-site management.
Full silviculture skillset: thinning, pruning, planting and spraying.
Based in Whangarei, working right across Northland and Auckland.
Quality control plots included free of charge on every job, no exceptions.
The economics
Your forest is an investment.
Thinning protects the return.
Left unthinned, a stand overcrowds. Every stem competes with the next for the same light, water and nutrients, and growth spreads thin across too many trees. Thinning removes the poorer performers early and hands their growing room to the crop trees left standing, so the site's growth compounds into fewer, larger, better-formed stems by the time it's harvested. Same site, same growth potential, just redirected into what actually pays.
Growth split across every stem means more trees, smaller diameter and a lower grade at harvest.
Same site, same growth potential, just concentrated into fewer, larger, higher-value crop trees.
Figures shown are for radiata pine, New Zealand's dominant plantation species. The same investment logic applies to other species we work with, though the numbers themselves are scoped per block.
What we do
Bush to boardroom.
Four disciplines, worked to the same standard by the same hands-on crew.
Manual Thinning to Waste Flagship
Our specialty. Precision, chainsaw-based manual thinning to waste, worked by crews that include the owners themselves. It's the discipline Pro Thin Northland aims to be the best at in the country. We also offer chemical thin to waste, drilling and treating the stems not selected for the final crop with a targeted herbicide. Whether manual or chemical is the better fit comes down to factors like tree age, environmental hazards, the site's walk hindrance and the client's own preference.
Planting & Spraying
Establishment planting and release spraying to get young stands off to a clean, well-spaced start.
Pruning
Form pruning by loppers or chainsaw, whichever suits the block, carried out with the same precision our crew is known for. Especially recommended on smaller blocks to maximize the forest's potential.
Forest Management & Consulting
Stand assessment and management planning, backed by hands-on experience across the full silviculture cycle.
